Haiti - Health : Towards the reconstruction of the L'Asile Community Referral Hospital

The L’Asile Community Referral Hospital (HCR) (Nippes Department, Anse-à-Veau District), heavily damaged and rendered unusable by the August 14, 2021 earthquake ( https://www.haitilibre.com/en/news-34498-haiti-flash-the-partial-death-toll-increases-nearly-1-300-dead-and-5-700-injured.html ), continues to provide some essential services, but in temporary, relocated spaces that are insufficient to meet the needs of the population.

On Friday, September 14, 2025, as part of the relaunch of the L’Asile Hospital Center reconstruction project, Dr. Esther Ceus Dumont, Departmental Director of the Nippes Health Directorate (DSNI), accompanied by Carl Yvans Petit Frère, Project Management Unit (PMU) Supervisor for the World Bank, Maxo Julien, Administrator, and other technical and administrative staff, conducted a site visit. The main objective was to prepare the call for tenders for the demolition of the damaged structures and the construction of the new hospital center.

This site visit allowed for the collection of all the necessary data to finalize the tender documents, an essential step in launching the reconstruction of the L’Asile Hospital Center, one of the Ministry of Public Health’s priority projects.

In parallel, several other health infrastructure projects are progressing in Nippes :

• Work on the Lomond Health Center is in a very advanced stage;

• The reconstruction of the Paillant Health Center is progressing satisfactorily;

• Work on the Changeux Health Center will begin shortly, as the first tranche of funding has already been disbursed.

Through these projects, the DSNI reaffirms its commitment to strengthening the departmental health system, improving access to care, and building resilient infrastructure adapted to the realities and needs of the communities.
