Haiti - Nippes : Construction of the departmental incinerator for biomedical waste

The Nippes Health Directorate has taken a decisive step in strengthening the department's health infrastructure with the construction of the departmental biomedical waste incinerator, a strategic project championed with determination by the Departmental Director, Dr. Esther Ceus Dumont.

During a site visit, Dr. Dumont reaffirmed her commitment to providing the Nippes department with a modern incinerator capable of ensuring the safe disposal of medical waste and residues produced by public and private healthcare facilities. According to the Departmental Director, this infrastructure is an essential tool for preventing health risks, protecting the population, and preserving the environment, filling a major structural gap in biomedical waste management.

This project, financed by the World Bank and carried out under the delegated project management of the Project Management Unit and the Ministry of Public Health, headed by Minister Dr. Sinal Bertrand, is being executed by the Haitian construction firm SOPEC PLUS.

The realization of this project is the result of strong institutional mobilization. The land designated for the incinerator, located on the same property as the offices of the Departmental Health Directorate, had been illegally seized. Under the leadership of Esther Ceus Dumont, a process involving the police and judicial authorities, the General Directorate of Taxes, the Ministry of Planning, and other relevant bodies led to the site's return to the Ministry and the commencement of construction.

Today, the project is progressing rapidly, reflecting the Departmental Director's determination to bring this important project for the Nippes department to fruition.
