Haiti - Environment : Strategic meeting on strengthening climate data monitoring capacities

The Ministry of the Environment (MdE), in partnership with the United Nations Development Programme (UNDP), held the third meeting of the Steering Committee for the project "Strengthening National Institutions in Haiti to Meet the Transparency Requirements of the Paris Agreement : Capacity-building Initiative for Transparency" (CBIT-Haiti).

This strategic meeting is part of the Government’s efforts to strengthen national capacities for monitoring, collecting, and verifying climate data, in accordance with Haiti’s international commitments under the Paris Agreement. It provided an opportunity to assess the progress of project activities, identify challenges encountered, and define priority areas for future actions.

Speaking at the meeting, Sylvain Merlin, UNDP Deputy Resident Representative in Haiti, reaffirmed the institution’s commitment to supporting Haiti in strengthening its climate transparency mechanisms and establishing a reliable national environmental data management system.

For his part, Moïse Fils Jean Pierre, Minister of the Environment, expressed his gratitude to the Global Environment Facility (GEF) for its crucial financial support, as well as to the UNDP for its sustained technical assistance. He also acknowledged the contributions of institutional and technical partners, including the Ministry of Public Works through the Bureau of Mines and Energy, the Faculty of Agronomy and Veterinary Medicine, the Interprofessional Technical Center for Studies on Atmospheric Pollution (CITEPA - France, a non-profit organization), and the Haitian consulting firm EQUITERRA.

Minister Jean Pierre also emphasized that the CBIT-Haiti project reflects the country's commitment to adopting an approach based on scientific rigor, transparency, and national ownership of processes related to combating climate change. He noted that this meeting represents an important step in consolidating the project's achievements and ensuring its sustainability for the benefit of future generations.

Through this initiative, the Ministry reiterates its commitment to strengthening national climate governance and actively contributing to international efforts to combat climate change.
