Haiti - Health : MSF increases hospital capacity in the country
Present in Haiti before 2010, Medecins Sans Frontieres (MSF) has lost 12 members of its teams the fateful day of January 12, 2010. Two MSF hospitals were also destroyed. Since then, MSF has provided its support to a hospital of the Ministry of Health in the poor neighborhood of Cite-Soleil and built four others whose one is in the finishing phase.

600 hospital beds for Haitians :

The Centre of Reference in obstetric emergencies (CRUO) began its activities in Delmas 33 in April. With a capacity of 130 beds, CRUO welcomes pregnant women with complications that threaten their lives or those of the fetus. Since its opening, 1.432 surgical procedures took place and 4.600 babies are born, like Esther, the daughter of Betty Belgarde, "I lost my first three babies immediately after birth. The last was born premature too, but thanks to the care she receive here, I am confident to return home soon with her."

Drouillard Hospital opened its doors May 9, 2011 in the northern suburbs of the capital. The new structure of 208 beds has taken over from the temporary hospital that worked under inflatable tents on the sports field at Saint-Louis de Gonzague in January 2010. Its teams treat medical and surgical emergencies with specialized care for burn patients as well as follow in physiotherapy and mental health. Every day, the hospital receives an average of 55 new patients and performs 20 surgeries. "The earthquake is not directly responsible for the cases that we see today, who are mostly victims of road accidents, domestic accidents, or violence. However, we note an increased vulnerability on the psychological level since the disaster: the patients have more difficulties to support additional trauma as an assault or an accident," said Felix Kouassi Konan, Medical Director of the hospital Drouillard.

Chatuley Hospital, located in the town of Léogâne, near the epicenter of the earthquake, destroyed to more than 80%, was launched in January 2010. From an installation of a temporary structure in containers of 160 beds, it remains the only hospital in the area, supporting emergencies while providing gynecology-obstetrics care and pediatrics. n 2011, medical staff treated 73.741 patients, performed 3,755 surgeries and conducted 4.501 births.

In the industrial area of ​​Tabarre, northeast of Port-au-Prince, construction teams add the finishing touches to the Centre "Nap Kenbe". The latest hospital MSF which reinforces the provision of free care of the urban center. Consisting of an assembly of 268 modules with a capacity of 108 beds, it will cover the case of emergency trauma surgery and visceral. Its opening is scheduled for February 2012.

MSF also continues its medical activities in a reference center and of emergency to Martissant opened in late 2006, where an average of 4.370 patients are treated each month.

During the cholera epidemic, MSF has set up an unprecedented operation with more than 75 health care facilities and 4,000 staff deployed on the territory of Haiti at the height of the crisis. Nearly 170,000 patients were treated between October 2010 and November 2011. The 2/3 of expenditure on human resources (120 million U.S. dollars) were paid in wages to the Haitian staff. To anticipate a possible new outbreak, MSF has established a plan of emergency preparedness for a rapid healing response and wide-ranging.
