The UN Secretary-General is expected in Haiti

United Nations Secretary-General António Guterres will travel to Haiti on Tuesday, June 16, 2026, for a solidarity visit, UN Deputy Spokesperson Farhan Haq announced on Monday. The Secretary-General wishes to personally assess the major humanitarian and security challenges, in a context where population displacement has reached record levels (nearly 1.5 million people displaced by the violence).

He specified that Guterres will meet with men, women, and children whose lives have been shattered by the violence and will "see firsthand the humanitarian and security challenges facing the country, as well as the efforts undertaken by the authorities and the international community to restore stability and support the Haitian people."

Haq stated that during his visit to Haiti, a Francophone country brought to Haiti by the United Nations in response to its multidimensional crisis, including logistical and operational support for the Gang Supression Force (GSF), in accordance with Security Council Resolution 2793 https://www.haitilibre.com/en/news-45891-haiti-flash-the-security-council-has-voted-for-the-new-gang-repression-force.html

Guterres will meet with humanitarian partners and Haitian Prime Minister Alix Didier Fils-Aimé to discuss the country's stability and democratic transition, as it prepares for widely anticipated elections before the end of the year.

Haq indicated that the Secretary-General will travel to Haiti via the Dominican Republic and that, during his stay in Santo Domingo, he is expected to meet with national authorities before returning to New York on June 17.
