Haiti - Environment : «We want a more beautiful Haiti, not a garbage dump !»

On Friday, July 10, 2026, as part of the 8th National Day of Citizen Mobilization against the use of polystyrene (in all its forms) in Haiti, the National Citizen Movement for Climate Alternatiba Haiti, in collaboration with the Francophone Action Group for the Environment (GAFE), is carrying out actions.

In more than 20 municipalities across the country, citizens mobilized in front of town halls to demand a real, total, definitive, and unconditional ban on polystyrene products, as well as the effective enforcement of the decree of July 10, 2013 (https://www.haitilibre.com/en/news-8995-haiti-notice-ban-on-plastic-bags-and-styrofoam.html and https://www.haitilibre.com/article-9138-haiti-environnement-entree-en-vigueur-de-l-interdiction-du-polyethylene-et-du-polystyrene-expanse.html) and to send a clear message : "We want a more beautiful Haiti, not a garbage dump ! Down with polystyrene !"

"When a product has been banned for over ten years and continues to flood markets and the environment, it shows that the problem lies not with the law, but with the will to enforce it," declared Alternatiba and GAFE.

Polystyrene pollutes the environment, clogs canals and ravines, increases the risk of flooding, and poses a threat to public health because it causes cancer. Furthermore, these products enter the country through smuggling networks, these organizations emphasize.

Alternatiba Haiti and GAFE are calling on the authorities "to implement and enforce the decree of July 10, 2013, and to put an end to the importation and trade of polystyrene products; to strengthen border controls; to encourage environmentally friendly alternatives and reusable containers [...] We invite all citizens, community organisations, schools, universities, churches, businesses and local authorities to support this mobilisation and to monitor those using products made from polystyrene. »
