Haiti - Economy : Combat fraud and tax evasion

This week, during the symposium on the Finance and Technology Applied, organized by the Groupe croissance, which is held in Haiti at the hotel Karibe, of 17 to 20 April 2012, around the theme "Facilitate the financial inclusion in Haiti" The intensification of fiscal control mechanisms, is one of the provisions that was mentioned by Paul Balmy Eugene, Deputy Director of the General Tax Directorate (DGI) to combat fraud and tax evasion. According to him, modernization of the system is an essential element to achieve this goal.

"[...] The traffic control at the borders should be more rigid at the level of customs to increase state revenue. Moreover, at the level of the General Tax Directorate (DGI), it is important also to strengthen the recovery process," stated Pierre Erold Etienne, Director General of the Ministry of Economy and Finance, who pointed out that customs fraud and smuggling [nearly $ 1 billion per year] are facilitated by the weakness of structures, emphasizing on the need to strengthen the latter, whether customs, the DGI, the Tax Inspectorate and to the Directorate of the Ministry.
