Haiti - Humanitarian : At Cannes Film Festival, Sean Penn puts Haiti under the spotlight
Actor Sean Penn took advantage of the Cannes Film Festival to attract once again, the media and the international community on Haiti. In Haiti since 2010, Sean Penn has since become an itinerant ambassador of the country and in 2012 received the Peace Summit Award for his humanitarian work, helps tirelessly to the reconstruction of houses, schools and hospitals throughout the J/P Haitian Relief Organization.7

The Cannes Film Festival has organized Friday, May 18, a fundraising event for Haiti "Carnival in Cannes" presented by Giorgio Armani, in order to raise funds
[€1.3 million - $1.66 million] in support to the associations J/P HRO of Sean Penn, Artists for Peace and Justice of Paul Haggis and Happy Heart's Fund of Petra Nemcova. This is the first time the festival is supporting a fundraising Gala. For Haiti and Sean Penn, Thierry Fremaux, General Delegate of the Festival, made an exception. The event was held under a tent next to the Palais des Festivals where celebrity guests have paid 5.000 U.S. dollars per ticket and up to $100,000 per table of 12 persons.

In the afternoon of Friday, at a press conference, Sean Penn has asked President Obama to support Haitian President Michel Martelly "It is time that our very elegant and formidable president of the United States stands side by side with this new hope incarnated by Michel Martelly," Speaking of concrete actions in Haiti, Sean believes that education is a priority need but also roads to connect the cities, basic infrastructure "There are still 450,000 refugees [...] but not enough collaboration on the ground among various agencies [...] There is a human obligation to help Haiti" but for Sean, the key, "it is primarily the creation of jobs so that they [the Haitians], no longer need us, except as tourists" regretting that the mobilization intervenes, in Haiti as elsewhere, that in emergency situations, before declining rapidly justifying on this subject, his strong remarks "It's not only celebrities who went for a day, it's the whole fucking world. It's all of you [the medias]..."

Sean Penn told "There is something magical in Haiti [...] This country has never had a chance to succeed but now we feel that it's different. It is only necessary to give them the tools to leave. I have hope in the new leadership [...]". He indicated that he tried to convince filmmakers to come and shoot films in Haiti. For his part, Petra Nemcova has announced that she had a proposal to organize a fashion show on site.
