Haiti - Economy : No wage increase for civil servants

Marie Carmelle Jean Marie, the Minister of Economy and Finance this Tuesday that defended the Finance Bill 2012-2013 before the Commission Economy and Finance of the House of Deputies, explained, in response to some deputies who requested the authorities to grant salary adjustments for police and teachers, that while considering the appropriateness of the request and "Despite the government's social sensitivity, it does not have the means to increase the salaries of civil servants of the State," it can not grant the allocation of so-called 14th month, or increase the salaries of police and public school teachers

"We must learn to live with what we have", insisted the Minister stressing that government did not wish to reduce its public investment possibilities that must primarily facilitate the arrival of investors and the job creation.

Sending a message to the 65.000 civil servants of the State, the Minister encouraged them to show solidarity with other citizens who depend on state intervention, reminding them that they regularly receive their salaries, but they should think about their brothers and sisters who have no job.

Just announced, the government decision the reactions are rapidly come in the education sector.

Professor George Wilbert Frank, spokesman of the National Union of Educators Normaliens and of Haitians Educators (UNNOEH) reported that the Government had just put it in an awkward position at the approach of back to school scheduled for September 3, indicating that teachers members of several unions have threatened to boycott the new school year particularly in the region of Jérémie (Southwest) if they do not get an increase [the teachers who say they receive only 5,000 gourdes every month, asking that their wages are multiplied by 10...] the Spokesperson of the UNNOEH clarified that regional coordination of the various teachers' organizations grouped in platform, only needed a word of command to take action.

For his part, Léo Litolu, Coordinator of the Union of Parents' Progressives (UPEP), lamented that the improvement of living conditions of civil servants was not a government priority, noting that the Government always found the resources to fund "the pseudo welfare programs including Ti manman chéri and Katye Pa’m Poze." He launches an appeal to the various sectors concerned, not to sit idly by.
