Haiti - Health : Sophia Martelly seeking international partnerships public-private
Tuesday, July 24, 2012, on the sidelines of the International Convention on AIDS in Washington DC, the First Lady of Haiti, Sophia Martelly, accompanied by Mrs. Florence Duperval Guillaume, the Haitian Minister of Public Health and Population, met Mr. Gabriel Jaramillo, Director of the Global Fund against AIDS, Tuberculosis and Malaria, around certain reforms in view, within the Global Fund.

Gabriel Jaramillo, has informed the Haitian delegation of ongoing reforms at the Global Fund, in terms of management and assistance to beneficiaries. Mr. Jaramillo wished to have comments and suggestions of Haiti, to consider as part of this reform, as a beneficiary country of support of Global Fund. This meeting allowed Sophia Martelly, President of Multisectoral Coordination Committee (CCM-Haiti) o better define the outline of change.

The First Lady, then met with Ernest Massiah, Regional Director of UNAIDS, who was accompanied by two executives of the Unicef. They discussed of support of the organization to international donors in the objective of the mobilization of funds, of maternal and child interventions in Haiti and of the importance of activities of Prevention and of Mother to Child Transmission (PMTCT).

The First Lady also met with leaders of Jhpiego, an organization specializing in maternal and child health, affiliated with Johns Hopkins University. Mrs. Martelly and the Minister of Health took the opportunity to draw attention of Jhpiego on women's access to services against cancers, especially that of the cervix. They explored the possibilities for this organization to bring its expertise to the programs implemented in Haiti in the areas of nutrition and reproductive health. Following this successful meeting, officials of Jhpiego have decided to offer to the Haitian state, two units of Cryotherapy.

After a final meeting of the First Lady at the Convention Center, with Ms. Nancy Mahon Executive Director of the "MAC AIDS Fund", around the possibilities of accompanying of this organism in the creation of Hospitals in Haiti, Sophia Martelly, accompanied by the Minister of Health and Dr. Jean Robert Brutus, Director of the program "Aba Grangou" went to the headquarters of the United States Agency for International Development (USAID) to meet with Don Steinberg, the Deputy Administrator, Mrs. Dina Esposito Program Director of program Food for Peace (FFP) and Mr. Mark Feierstein, Responsible for Latin America and the Caribbean, around the USAID support to the National Programme of Fight against hunger and malnutrition in Haiti, "Aba Grangou" and to the promotion of local production in Haiti.

This was also the First Lady and Dr. Jean Robert Brutus, to find a support for school feeding, as a way to move agricultural production, and work for programs that aim to increase the production of local products, are coupled with purchases for food.

The First Lady believes that the progress of Haiti in the fight against the spread of AIDS and of approach in terms of answers to the problems of basic health services and sustainable development are considerable and deserve the attention of donors and of the international community in general.
