Haiti - Social : Delivery of documents to 300 undocumented Haitians in the Dominican Republic
As part of a program supported by the United Nations Commission for Refugees and the European Union, aimed at documenting thousands of Haitians undocumented in the Dominican Republic, the Government of Haiti gave Saturday, identity documents to 300 of our compatriots living illegally in neighboring Republic.

300 Haitians living in San Pedro de Macoris [72 kilometers east of Santo Domingo] where the Haitian labor is present in the field, received birth certificates and passports.

Gonzalo Vargas Llosa, the Head of the Mission of the United Nations Commission in the Dominican Republic, told the local press that with this delivery of document, the number of Haitian citizens beneficiaries of this program now stands at more than 2,000 this year and 4,000 since 2010 "Today, the Haitian State has done its part by giving passports and birth certificates to its citizens," said Vargas Llosa adding, "Now it depends entirely on the Dominican State to move forward the process a little further," referring to the power of Dominican authorities to grant or not to foreigners, residence in their territory.

Fritz Cinéas, Ambassador of Haiti to the Dominican Republic, present at this delivery of document declared "For over 100 years, Haitians come here, and with their work, their sweat and their good will, they have contributed to the development of this country [...]"

Remember that each year, thousands of Haitians illegal, try their luck in the Dominican Republic. Undocumented our compatriots can not get the basic essential service in Dominican Republic, in addition to risk to be expulsed each day, since the resumption in February 2011 of forced repatriations [repatriation was suspended in February 2010 for humanitarian reasons].
