Haiti - Reconstruction : Roundtable on the Public Service of Drinking Water and Sanitation (EPA) in Haiti
The President of the Republic, Michel Martelly, officially opened Wednesday at the Hotel Montana, the activities of the Roundtable around the improvement of public service of Water Supply and Sanitation (EPA) in Haiti.

In the presence of Minister of the Interior and Territorial Communities, Mr. St-Cyr Ronsard, the Secretary of State for Public Works, Mr. Philippe Cineas, the Director General of the DINEPA, Lionel Joseph Duvalsaint and several actors, representatives of international organizations and the private sector involved in the sector, the Head of State wanted to recall the necessity to act, to continue the commitment taken by the Haitian government last January 11 to improve the lives of Haitians by providing drinking water, teaching them good hygiene practices and encouraging them to become more involved in the measures to adopt in term of sanitation.

These activities took place over two days on 19 and 20 December, around the themes related to the regulation of the Drinking Water and Sanitation Sector (EPA) in Haiti and the coordination of stakeholders, participate of the necessity for the Haitian State to rule on challenges and strategies for sanitation in Haiti. It was question for the various actors to think, at first, on the regulatory framework in this matter, on the social norms, planning, project management, infrastructure EPA and regulatory framework for the execution of work.

This Round Table organized by DINEPA also allowed to dynamize the coordination with stakeholders (IDB, AECID and other donors) involved in the sector and to review the behavior of the institution and its reactions in period of emergency.

"At a time when Haiti is open for business, ensuring the provision of basic services, including water and sanitation, should be at the rendezvous. This sector must accompany the country's socioeconomic development. Clean water and a cleaner environment promote development ", stated that the President of the Republic, while insisting on the urgency of the revitalization of public drinking water and sanitation which, according to him, constitute one of the engines of the construction of the new Haiti where the fundamental rights of our citizens will be promoted, safeguarded and respected.

For his part, the Secretary of State for Public Works, Mr. Philippe Cinéas, representing the Minister of TPTC, highlighted the extent of the mobilization at all levels in favor of access to drinking water. "It is necessary to achieve a better coherence in the water sector, its sound management," he stressed while emphasizing the sustainability of the sector of the EPA.

The Director General of the DINEPA, Lionel Joseph Duvalsaint has, meanwhile, reported the efforts made in this area by the State at the national level. "80 percent of the population does not have access to drinking water facilities, and the work to be done is important," he confirmed. He also recalled that these days of meetings and exchanges will allow to review the strategies of the State to guarantee the quality of water, essential factor for health and accessibility.

The President of the Republic, while recalling that a substantial effort has been made by the Treasury which has granted to DINEPA for 2012-2013 a budget of 157 million gourdes, reiterates its commitment to enable the institution to deploy its policy so that the country can catch up with the delays and get closer to achieving the Millennium Development 2015.

This official launch also resulted in an exhibition of plastic works of Haitian painters on fetching water in Haiti.
