Haiti - Politic : Statement of Desras and Levaillant on the new Legislative Palace

Thursday, the Government and the Legislative Body have proceeded officially, to the laying of the foundation stone and the launch of construction work of the new Legislative Building to house the Haitian Parliament. Estimated at approximately $33 million (Funding: IMF debt relief), work should take 2 years.

At this symbolic ceremony, Simon Dieuseul Desras, the President of the Senate declared "[...] This Palace that the apologists of the legislative branch require of all their vows, will transform the tissular situation and panoramic of Port-au-Prince.

We highlight particularly to the attention of our partners, of the Executive and International, especially the IMF, that the reconstruction should definitely marry the national interests, construction trades, engineering colleges and of architects, the construction firms, service companies and all organized groups of intervention must be associated to the works of reconstructing the country and which is theirs [...] Haiti must correct, regulate, and balance the contracting, to meet the requirements of a multi-dimensional reconstruction.

Ladies and gentlemen, we have to cross together hand in hand, eyes open, the mind alert, this step of the reconstruction of the Legislative Palace, identified as an element of the infrastructure majestic and sublime of the Haitian dream [...]"

For his part, Levaillant Louis Jeune, President of the Chamber of Deputies recalled that "[...] The laying of a foundation stone is a promise, on behalf of the Chamber of Deputies, I express the wish that it be held in a timely manner.

It is indeed important that the Haitian Parliament, is housed and be able to work in an environment worthy of the mission and powers that the people gave him [...] that the new Legislative Palace is a symbol of the rebirth of our country after the earthquake January 12, 2010 whose soon this will be the 3rd anniversary, 3 difficult years during which we must recognize, other shocks, political this time, have not ceased to test the foundations of our young and fragile democracy and the hopes that the Haitian people had placed in it and to which it has not given up [...]"
