Haiti - Diplomacy : United States and UN take the defense of Haiti

Officials of the U.S. State Department and of UN ask the Canadian Minister of International Cooperation, Julian Fantino, to withdraw his controversial statements... https://www.haitilibre.com/en/news-7564-haiti-reconstruction-canada-freezes-funds-for-haiti-confusion-and-reactions.html concerning the freezes and the revision of the aid to Haiti.

The U.S. State Department stated that it considered Canada as a valuable partner to Haiti and that it did not want see it modify one of its programs, Mrs. Eileen Wickstrom Smith, a senior official in the U.S. State Department's Haiti office declared "Haiti is not going to become a middle-income country overnight [...] We continue our strong partnership with the government of Haiti and the people of Haiti, and we would like to see the Canadian government continue its programs. We think they've been an important contributor, and we would like them to stay that way [...]"

For her part, Jessica Faieta, director for the UNDP's Latin American bureau said "We are saddened actually that Canada, … they are reviewing their support [...] I think for anyone who comes to Haiti for the first time, you normally are actually shocked by the level of challenges that the country has. But we also need to look deep into the context of where the country is coming from."

Mrs. Smith and Mrs. Faieta stressed as many Canadian humanitarian experts, that Haiti was the victim of a cholera epidemic and of three hurricanes since the 2010 earthquake, indicating that the obstacles were not lacking for Haiti...
