Sunday at 10:30 am on the Wharf of Jacmel, the National Institute of Music of Haiti (INAMUH) will proceed to the signing ceremony of the Memorandum of Understanding to mark the launch of the System of Orchestras and Choirs Juvenile and Infantile of Haiti under the patronage of President Michel Joseph Martelly and the Venezuelan State, in the presence of the Head of State, of the Ambassador of Venezuela to Haiti, Pedro Antonio Gonzalez Canino and Mrs. Josette Darguste, Minister of Culture.

The System of Orchestras and Choirs Juvenile and Infantile of Haiti, is a large-scale project aimed to create a mechanism for social inclusion and integration of children and youth through music education. This program, based on the model of "El Sistema" of the Foundation Simon Bolivar of Venezuela, aims the establishment of a system of orchestras and choirs, with the social and cultural advantages derived therefrom, in order to help reverse the situation of abandonment and exclusion existing in Haiti.

The project focuses on four cores located in three cities :

  • The main core implanted in Hinche, headquarters of the INAMUH, is the state body and of coordination between all cores and is directed by Raoul Denis Jr, General Coordinator and Pascale Denis de Moquete, Academic Director of the INAMUH.
  • The core of Holy Trinity in Port-au-Prince,established within the Holy Trinity Philharmonic Orchestra led by Father David César ;
  • The second core of Port-au-Prince is located in the camp of "Haïtian Relief" and directed by Benjamin Klause ;
  • The core of Jacmel is implanted in the School of Music Dessaix Baptiste, directed by Fritz Valesco.

Objectives :

  • Transfer the model of System of Orchestras and Choirs Juvenile and Infantile of Venezuela to the National Institute of Music and to the Symphony Orchestra Juvenile and Infantile of Haiti ;
  • Form 4 cores of Orchestras and Choirs Juvenile and Infantile ;
  • Train 22 Haitian teachers able to multiply the experience ;
  • Generate an audiovisual product enabling to disclose the experience at the international level ;
  • Generate new mechanisms for regional integration.

Origin of the project in Haiti :
In December 2011, the President Martelly had visited Venezuela on the occasion of the Summit for the Foundation of the Community of Latin American States. As part of this event, the Head of State attended a concert by a group of orchestras and choirs of Venezuelan system, conducted by Gustavo Dudamel. The President had expressed his admiration for the demonstration of more than 600 young people on stage and enthusiastically expressed his interest to replicate in Haiti. Thus the President Martelly, has created the National Institute of Music and the Symphony Orchestra Juvenile and Infantile of Haiti on June 11, 2012, with the explicit aim to develop a music education program similar to that founded by maestro José Antonio Abreu in Venezuela.
