Haiti - FLASH : President Hugo Chavez passed away

This Tuesday at 4:25 p.m. (8:55 p.m. GMT), the Venezuelan Vice-President Nicolas Maduro announced on the public television that Venezuelan President Hugo Chavez died in Caracas of the consequences of cancer "after fighting hard against a disease for almost two years," said Maduro with deep emotion.

Pending the official release, the President Michel Martelly has sent his condolences on his Facebook page "I extend, on behalf of the people of Haiti, my sincere condolences to the Venezuelan people following the death of President Hugo Chavez."

Pierre Richard Casimir, the Foreign Minister of Haiti stated that it is a "great loss for Venezuela, for the region and for Haiti, because of the quality of relations between the two countries."

"President Chávez was known for his deep concern for the poor, his enthusiasm for Latin American and Caribbean unity, and his solidarity with other nations [...] Venezuela’s generous support for Haiti following the earthquake of 2010 was just one example of that commitment. With his passing, the cause of regional integration loses one of its great champions," declared the President of the Inter-American Development Bank, Luis Alberto Moreno.

It is a time of great sorrow for Venezuelans and we stand with them, together with all the peoples of the region [...] We are certain that Venezuelans will know to come together in difficult times like these and move in peace and democracy toward the future," declared Secretary General of the Organization of American States (OAS), José Miguel Insulza.
