Haiti - Justice : Important presidential pardon for common-law prisoners
As part of its constitutional prerogatives, the Head of State has granted a pardon full and complete to certain common-law condemned. A Decree a commutation was also taken in favor of 6 lifers. It is a measure of clemency adopted in their favor on the basis of Articles 136, 145 and 146 of the Constitution and the Act of 24 September 1860 on the exercise of the right of pardon and commutation of sentence , as amended by the Act of 26 July 1906. This measure was taken by President Michel Martelly, on report of Me Jean Renel Sanon, Minister of Justice and Public Safety.

Commutation of sentence :
The sentence of 6 people previously sentenced to life imprisonment was commuted to 15 years imprisonment by the President of the Republic. They are Clermitha DESSOURCES, Genise SAINCERE, Marie Claudette PRESUME, Denel JEAN, Dieunord FRANCOIS, Daniel LEONARD.

Meanwhile the Ministry of Justice is actively engaged in the fight against prolonged pretrial detention. And correctional hearings are held permanently in several jurisdictions in the country. n the occasion of International Women's Day on March 8, 4 women, [Julie LAGUERRE, Stéphanie JEUNE, Islande JOSEPH, Imelda PAULISCA] after careful analysis of their case, were released by the Public Prosecutor at the Court of First instance of Port au Prince.

The Ministry of Justice and Public Security, through the implementation of the policy of the rule of law advocated by the Government Martelly-Lamothe, pledged to intensify the fight against prolonged detention throughout the country.
