Haiti - Literature : Launch of the International Colloquium on the Haitian poetry
The International Colloquium, around the work of one of the great figures of contemporary Haitian poetry, Georges Castera Fils, under the theme "The Haitian poetry in the Latin American and Caribbean context" held in Port-au-Prince of Thursday 2 to Saturday, May 4, 2013, was officially launched on 1 May 2013. Fritz Deshommes, Vice-Rector for Research of the State University of Haiti (UEH) delivered on this occasion, a rousing speech in honor of Georges Castera Fils and the Haitian poetry.

Speech by Vice-Rector Fritz Deshommes :
"The State University of Haiti (UEH) wishes to express his pride and happiness to participate in collaboration with the Foundation Culture et Création and all other partners in the organization of this important event, which is the International Colloquium on 'Haitian poetry in the Latin American and Caribbean / The place of Georges Castera Fils'.

In the era of the commodification of thought, knowledge, life, UEH and its partners want to promote Haitian poetry and emphasize on its prominent place in our literary heritage. It should be remembered that it is the major literary genre in Haiti. By the amount of work produced. By its function as a gateway in the literature as it is true that it accompanied the beginnings of most of our writers, novelists, short story writers, essayists, and among the largest including Franketienne, Lyonel Trouillot... By the multiple areas it addresses, with its countless contours and especially by its omnipresence in our history, playing the oversight role and often substitute a lack of thought, of benchmarks and perspectives.

At the same time, it is also celebrating a great poet, the most prolific in the history of the Haitian poetry, this witness capital of our contemporary verses of these past 60 years, who knew and practice René Belance Jacques Stephen Alexis, Félix Morisseau Leroy, Paul Laraque, the brothers Marcelin, Anthony Lespès.

Georges Castera fils – since it is him that we are talking – this is essential poet, one of the few that has never been attempted by the novel or story, this rigorous poet whose mastery of both official languages is one of its characteristics.

But it is also this humanist, who said his discomfort and rejection of the human condition and that nevertheless keeps his faith in love and tomorrows.

Georges Castera fils, it is also this sense of generosity that bring him to share his library, his knowledge with young people. It is this living legend who inspired, influenced several generations of poets. And it is one that today give to the nation our work, strong of more than thirty titles.

But it is also this man of conviction, remained equal to himself, true to his choices, his vision, his hopes, one of the few of us who never afraid to say, recall and remember that he is a leftist. A leftist ? That is to say, a man of principle, a man of heart, a man of courage, a man of integrity, passionate about social justice, brotherhood and human solidarity.

Georges Castera Fils, is also this monument, this heritage object of multiple awards, multiple national and international awards but who keep this modesty, this great humility.

In this regard, the UEH is proud to have inaugurated the recent series of homages to Georges Castera by offering him in October 2011, on behalf of the Initiative Committee for the establishment of the Academy of Haitian Creole, a plaque of honor rewarding the whole of his work in Creole during the 2011 edition of the International Day of the Creole language and culture and at the end of the International Symposium "Akademi Kreyòl Ayisyen: Ki Avantaj ? Problèm ? Ki Defi ? Ki Avni ?". La plaque disait : "Pou kontribisyon li nan envante tout fòm pwezi, powèm, lirik, travay kritik sou estetik ak ideoloji an kreyòl" (UEH-KIMAA, 29-10-11)

It was a few months before the tribute that will make him the Festival Etonnant Voyageurs in February 2012, Livres en Folie in June 2012.

At a time when UEH commits decisively in the value of our heritage just days before the launch of our research program on local knowledge ; just days before the parliament voted the Law on Academy of Haitian Creole [NDL / HL: April 23, 2013 by the Lower House], we are particularly pleased to welcome this major poet of our national language whose work reminds us that the Creole is also capable of rigor and poetic modernity. We also welcome the observer on of our most mundane daily practices that highlights our marble games ("teke-mab"), our kites and other aspects of our local knowledge and expertise.

We strongly hope that this conference opens the recovery process and ownership of our poetic heritage also ignored too long, too often devalued. That it opens up new avenues of research not only on the poetry of Georges but also on the Haitian poetry in general, its importance, its effect on our lives of people and its inclusion in a regional and international context. That it arouses the interest of our scientific researchers, our specialists in literature, sociology, linguistics, anthropology, psychology, history, among others.

We take this opportunity to introduce our warmest congratulations, to first, the Foundation Culture et Création (FCC) who took the initiative for this important event and has put all its dynamism, skill and determination. To all our colleagues and sister institutions of the Organizing Committee, the Scientific Committee, to all our partners we willingly extend as well as the panelists from here and elsewhere, to the moderators, the deans of our faculties.

A special word for the place of Madame Colette Pérodin of the FCC, which proved to be the backbone of our conference. Colette thank you and congratulations.

To all of you, all of us, an excellent and successful colloquium !"
