Haiti - Justice : The World Bank is helping Haiti in terms of mining legislation 20/05/2013 11:40:15
On Friday, the World Bank said in a note that it is trying to support the Haitian government in its efforts to develop the mining sector in the north of the country, which will require a recast of the laws that have never been updated since 1976 "The World Bank is supporting the Haitian government in improving the frameworks for mining, including legal provisions which are largely considered inadequate for current requirements," says Alexandre Abrantes, Special Envoy of World Bank to Haiti adding that the institution, is helping the government reach out to key players, including legislators, so that mining can happen in accordance with sustainable development principles.
However, the consolidation of the Acts in the mining sector in Haiti, a highly sensitive sector, is likely to be a path strewn with obstacles, given the lack of government majority in parliament and a strong opposition in the Senate.
