Haiti - Elections : Prime Minister multiplies meetings for the next Election

Monday, Prime Minister Laurent Lamothe had an important meeting at the Ministry of Planning and External Cooperation (MPCE) with Nigel Fisher, the Special Representative of the Secretary-General have the UN in Haiti, and Sophie Caen, the Senior Director in Haiti, of the United Nations Program for Development (UNDP) about the logistical and technical aspects of elections and the need to provide the Transitional College of the Permanent Electoral Council (CTCEP) financial and operational resources essential for the organization of upcoming elections.

Following the discussion, the Prime Minister Lamothe and his partners agreed to make every effort to allow CTCEP to complete all the steps necessary for the holding of fair elections in the country.

While adhering to the principles of autonomy and independence of the CTCEP, the Prime Minister recalled that he intended to work with all partners involved in the process such as the organizations of civil society, political parties, the National Identification Office (ONI), MINUSTAH and UNDP, to ensure that is realized the next elections.

The past weekend, the Prime Minister met with the electoral Advisors of the CTCEP. According to Me Néhémie Joseph, Electoral Advisor, one of three representatives of the Legislative Power with Mary Clunie Dumay Miracle and Pierre Simon Georges, the Head of Government would have promised a special financial assistance between 60 and 100 million gourdes to allow the electoral institution to meet its debts, buy vehicles and computer equipment among others.

In addition, Me Néhémie Joseph announced that CTCEP will submit to Parliament this week, the draft electoral law and the operating budget of CTCEP, adding that the electoral institution is currently working on the preparation of estimated budget for the realization of the next partial senatorial and local elections.

As to whether the elections will be held this year, Me Néhémie Joseph indicated not to be able to specify a date, saying that it depended on the time that Parliament will take to ratify the bill, explaining that once the law passed and promulgated and with a sufficient budget, it is necessary more or less 5 months to get everything in place for the holding of the next electoral contest.

Concerning the time it will take to the Parliament, the Presidents of the Lower House Jean Tolbert Alexis and Dieuseul Simon Desras of Senate, ensure that this law will be passed quickly, that it was "the first priority..."
