Haiti - Environment : A Haitian company wins international environmental award
Under the Ashden Awards [created in 2001], which aims to promote concrete and local energy solutions that help reduce emissions of carbon dioxide, protect the environment, reduce poverty and improve the living conditions of the population, the Haitian company "D & E Green Enterprises" was awarded the First Prize in the environmental category of "Small Island developing States" worth 20,000 pounds (± 30,000 U.S. dollars). A category introduced this year, with the support of the World Bank and the Energy Sector Management Assistance Program (ESMAP) through the SIDS DOCK program support. The second prize was awarded to Cabeólica (Cape Verde). The other finalists in the competition in this category were Green Power (Vanuatu) and the National Development Bank (Palau).

This award was presented by S. Vijay Iyer, Director of Sustainable Energy at the World Bank during a ceremony at the prestigious "Royal Geographical Society" in London.

Duquesne Fednard, CEO of D&E Green Enterprises, declared "We are delighted to win Ashden Awards. D&E is committed to providing cost-effective solutions using clean energy to the communities whose resources are limited, in order to break the cycle of energy poverty and stimulate economic growth. This award is a great opportunity for learning and sharing, which allows us to share our experience with others stakeholders while raising awareness the international community in our work."

S. Vijay Iyer, noted that "Throughout the world, small island developing States face enormous challenges, including limited resources, isolation and vulnerability to natural disasters and external shocks. I congratulate D&E Green Enterprises for proving that these states could become stronger and more independent while protecting natural resources. I hope others will learn from these innovations and will decide to develop business strategies and solutions for the challenges faced by the island states."

The entrepreneur Duquesne Fednard created D&E Green Enterprises in 2009 to find a solution to social and environmental problems in Haiti. The company produces effective wood charcoal cookstoves that reduce the amount of fuel needed for the preparation of food. They thus reduce home energy consumption and relieve the area of ​​wood supply, until then overfished and subject to human looting, that have nearly remove the country's forests. Since 2010, the company sold about 33,000 low energy charcoal cookstoves.
