Haiti - Sports : First Caribbean Encounter of Capoeira in Haiti
From 1 to 7 July 2013, Haiti will host the First Caribbean Encounter of Capoeira, an event that will be attended by capoeiristas from Caribbean, Latin America, the United States and Europe.

The event is an initiative of "Gingando Pela Paz" Project of the Brazilian NGO Viva Rio, which is present in Haiti since 2004 in Bel Air. Project activities started in 2008 and has benefited more than 1,000 people. Among the activities, the training of young leaders, capoeira teacher, and in project management.

Among the objectives of the encounter, the creation of a Caribbean Network of Capoeira, aimed at acting in the promotion of the culture of peace as well as the promotion of youth participation as a vehicle of this culture by promoting the creation of a policy of technical cooperation among the countries of the Caribbean. This network, would insist on the use of sport as a tool in the construction of citizenship and in the reduction of violence, while promoting exchanges between young educators from disadvantaged backgrounds.

Among the activities of this first encounter, are planned : training in human rights, capoeira classes and performances in public places. In addition, participants will undertake a march for peace in the streets of Bel Air and in the center of the capital. The week will end with the graduation of students, today they are 250.

Capoeira is an Afro-Brazilian martial art that has its origin in the methods of fighting and the dances of the African peoples of the days of slavery in Brazil. It differs from other martial arts by its playful side and often acrobatic. Capoeiristas can take a position in support or handstand to perform kicks or acrobatics. Of various forms, capoeira is played and/or fought at different grade levels and different speeds, usually accompanied by instruments, songs and raps hands.
