Haiti - Social : Project of Sea Shuttle

Wednesday was held a working meeting between the National Port Authority (APN) and the International Finance Corporation (IFC), about the feasibility of a project of sea shuttle [ferry].

Were present Engineer Alix Célestin, Director General of the APN, Engineer Ginelle Noel, Coordinator of the Planning UNIT and Engineer Jean Carrel Delpé, Director of the Technical Office and Messrs. Ary Naim and Philip Neves for IFC.

Discussions took place around an alternative project for maritime transport, of investment required to overcome the deficiencies of the road network and supplement the enormous difficulties to connect the southern metropolitan area of Port-au-Prince and its northern suburbs.

Pass through the capital by road to reach his workplace in the area of the international airport or school center is a veritable obstacle course for people forced to use a public transport disrupted. A situation which results in loss of time and money, which negatively affect the global economy.

An alternative to these bottlenecks is to use the sea to facilitate the movement of people at a lower cost and in a shorter time and at the same time help improve productivity, reduce waiting times and traveling in conditions that better respect the dignity of the person.

This project concerns the residents of South Port-au-Prince (Carrefour, Mariani, Gressier, Léogâne) attending the Downtown Port-au-Prince, Delmas and Cité Soleil.

To do this the thinking of stakeholders focused on, inter alia :

  • The amount of people to move;

  • The locations of boarding and disembarking sites ;

  • The number of shuttles needed ;

  • The difficulties associated with the management of flows of people ;

  • The development of a public-private partnership between the owners of vehicles already providing transportation in these areas and the State ;

  • The involvement of various public sectors concerned by this project.
