Haiti - Security : Inauguration of the marine base in Les Cayes 08/08/2013 09:31:10 Third marine base in the country, this new structure, strategically located facing the South America and next Caribbean neighbors like Jamaica, should eventually help regulate the movement of people and goods and to fight more effectively against drug trafficking in the territorial waters of the Southern Department. "The construction of the marine base in Les Cayes, funded by Canada, is realized in a strategic position to rout the traffickers. Through an effective control of large South, it will also allow to strengthen security in Ile-à-Vache who is about to be transformed as one of the biggest tourist destinations in the Caribbean," declared the Prime Minister, who said at the same time rely on multilateral cooperation to execute a number of projects related to strengthening the police institution. "This project, funded to the tune of U.S. $ 7 million by Canada, showed how several donors can work together. I thank UNDP and MINUSTAH for their unwavering support. The patrol of South can start now !" declared Canadian Ambassador Henri-Paul Normandin. This base includes a dock 120 meters long that can accommodate four shuttles, a 450 square meter building housing the administration and operations, and a cafeteria of 180 square meters for 80 coastguard make up the new marine base in Les Cayes. A dormitory with a capacity of 150 beds is under construction and is scheduled for the end of the year. This complex is the result of collaboration between the Haitian authorities, those of Canada and the United Nations and is in direct line with the reform of the PNH. "The city of Les Cayes is on a very unstable ground which slowed the field study. The work was of great magnitude, we had to dredge 11,249 cubic meters of land for the construction of the wharf and building foundations are buried 30 meters deep. There is also a para-seismic and hurricane-resistant building," said the UNDP engineer Jean-Marie Dutreuil which monitored the work. "We are at a strategic maritime crossroads. The île à Vache and more generally the Southern Department continue to evolve towards the economic development and tourism. But one problem remains: security. Without security, there is no development and no investment. The fight against smuggling is therefore crucial for our country and I look forward to these new resources made available to the PNH," declared Prime Minister Lamothe. HL/ SL/ HaitiLibre
