Haiti - Social : Relocation plan for over 20,000 IDPs 10/08/2013 13:15:45
Despite a significant decrease in the number of displaced persons, from 320,000 in March 2013 to 278.945 in June 2013, 75,000 re maining IDPs living in 105 camps. Of the 352 IDP sites remaining, up to 75% of them are located on private land, and many land owners are pressuring residents to leave. The communes most affected by evictions are Delmas, Petion-Ville, Carrefour and Port-au-Prince, as well as Leogane outside the metropolitan area. Together, they account for almost 80% of all evictions involving 12,859 households and 131 IDP sites of the 177 closed by forced eviction. UK announced a relocation plan for nearly 20,000 vulnerable people living in IDP camps. At a cost of 10.7 million U.S. dollars, this program also aims to support abused women living in slums. 7.2 million will be used to pay rent subsidies for one year to more than 17,500 families and the establishment of sanitation and drinking water activities in the camps. The remaining $ 3.5 million will be used to supply and maintain the trucks carrying aid in the camps. Note that the capacities have Decreased for camp management and protection activities (legal referral, mediation with owners) hinder proper support. Of the 352 IDP sites currently open, only 20 have dedicated camp management support. Although this coverage accounts for only 5.7% of all open sites, they host 30.8% of the total IDP (household) population or about 79,000 people. See also : TB/ HaitiLibre
