Haiti - Technology : 3rd Hackathon to the benefit of non-sighted people
The École Supérieure d'Infotronique d'Haïti (ESIH) organized in its premises, its 3rd Hackathon (technological marathon) on 17 and 18 August, around the theme "Ann raproche e rann teknoloji a itil andikape nou yo". This Hackathon is achieved as part of a public-private partnership between the Office of the Secretary of State for the Integration of Persons with Disabilities (BSEIPH) and ESIH which provides funding for this event in its entirety.

This third edition is aimed at developing a software to transform phone data for a more suitable use for people with visual impairments. 48 hours, 40 young computer programmers, developers, web designers and graphic designers from various higher education institutions in Haiti, will meet for one and the same noble cause. These young people will be divided into four teams placed in competition. Each team will work to develop an appropriate technological solution for people with disabilities.

This new technological tool will transform graphics data transferred by telephone texting (SMS) and voice data and in electronic messages. It will essentially affect the blind and will, according to officials, a new method of communication in Haiti, which will help to ensure the autonomy of these people.

Othniel Etienne, Communications Advisor, Office of the Secretary of State for the Integration of Persons with Disabilities, congratulates the organization of the Hackathon that he considers to be a cost-effective solution with immediate impact, which can be used by the government to develop technology.

According to Richardson Ciguené, a student in ESIH the Hackathonalso develops the idea of ​​"Konbit nasyonal" applied to the technology. A "konbit" whose goal is very clear: Develop an application that works and can be used immediately "The work that require several weeks if carried out by a small group of specialists, will be conducted at the end of these two days, thanks to our volunteer participation. We will do at the same time, new discoveries and experiences in the field."

Meanwhile, the initiators seek to prove through this creative work that young Haitian students have great potential and that it is just necessary to supervise them. "The event will reveal opportunities to create new jobs, stimulating creativity among students," said Marlène Sam, responsible for cooperation at ESIH. The latter believe it is time that the youth is assumes itself and contributes to the development and well-being of its community.
