Haiti - Education : President Martelly officially launched the new school year
Tuesday at the National School Republic of the United States of America, President Michel Martelly, proceeded at the official launch of the new school year 2013-2014. The ceremony was attended by Vanneur Pierre, Minister of National Education and Vocational Training (MENFP), Ms. Magalie Georges, Director of the School, Ivalan Espérance, the Departmental Director of Education for West, Gonzague Day, Departmental Delegate of the West, Faculty and executives of the MENFP.

In his speech for the occasion, the Head of State stressed the importance of the new school year in the lives of everyone. He took the opportunity to wish the children, teachers, parents and the various actors involved in the educational system, a good school year. "I know that the situation is very difficult for you, but I wish to renew my support and solidarity. I give you the guarantee that I will continue to work to bring significant changes in the education system. My Administration will continue to assist you by providing you with free educational materials, ensuring the free of the first cycle of basic education and transportation."



940,000 students will receive a meal each day, adding that more 783.245 school kits will be distributed across the country and that the State had put available for public school students over a million textbooks to facilitate learning and subsidized nearly 610,000 textbooks [up to 70% of the cost]. Arrangements have also been made to repair 500 public schools and 500 community schools. 230 buses will provide free transportation to students through the ten departments.

President Martelly indicated that the government had already spent $1.4 billion gourdes to facilitate the new school year and that the State had also budgeted $ 2.5 billion gourdes for the academic year 2013-2014.

The Head of State recalled that his administration is committed to improve the working conditions of teachers "Investing in education can only put the country on the track of development [...] The Teachers are essential in the work that my administration, by adapting an educational system that can create jobs in the country. I applaud your commitment while saying that the country's future rests on your shoulders. I rely on you to give a good and solid education to children."

On the occasion of this launch the Head of State has distributed uniforms, kits and textbooks to students of national schools Republic of the United States of America, Republic of Brazil and Célie Lilavois.
