Haiti - Denationalization : Dominican President Danilo Medina open to dialogue...

Following the final decision, issued on 23 September 2013, by the Constitutional Court of the Dominican Republic, aiming to withdraw citizenship to descendants of Haitians born in the Dominican Republic after 1929, on the basis that their parents were considered "in transit" [without legal document at the time of the birth of their child], the Dominican President Danilo Medina, as part of a consultation process, met earlier this week, for more than an hour, delegations of defense organizations of Dominicans of Haitian descent whose that of Reconocido group led by Ana Maria Belique, of Bono Centre, led by Father Mario Serrano and network "Red de Encuentro Dominico-Haitiana" led by Antonio Polémil in order to gather information and ideas that could lead to a solution.

President Medina would have informed them, that he will convene other powers of the state to expand the discussion. According to the representatives of these organizations, Danilo Medina would have been very receptive to the presentation of the consequences of the denationalization. However, it should be noted that no official statement was issued after the meetings, to confirm or deny these informations.

President Danilo Medina declared that the decision of the Constitutional Court on the Dominican nationality, was linked to the Dominican Constitution and the Executive Branch, had no authority to intervene in the decisions of the Constitutional Court due to the independence of the three powers [like Haiti]. President Medina interviewed on this topic by Dominican journalists on the sidelines of an event this week said "I do not know if legally an injustice has been done, but there is a human problem that we must solve."
