Haiti - Health : Prevention of unwanted pregnancies 14/10/2013 12:40:44 If the past 20 years, significant progress has been achieved in the area of maternal health, progress remains limited and fragile in terms of access to modern methods of contraception. In 2012 in developing countries, 222 million women who want to avoid pregnancy have not access to a method of contraception. Worldwide, about 40% of pregnancies are unwanted. In Latin America and the Caribbean, the rate is estimated at 60%. In Haiti, the official figures for 2012 (EMMUS V) show that 99.8% of women know at least one modern method, however, so far 38% of contraceptive needs are not met. The rate of use of modern methods of contraception amounts to only 31% for women 15 to 49 years. Haiti is one of 40 countries with high maternal mortality (greater than 300 deaths per 100,000 live births) and complications related to unwanted pregnancies are the third leading cause of maternal deaths accoring to the IHE and MSPP [Survey Report on obstetric and neonatal care of emergency in Haiti. Survey conducted by the Institut Haitien de l'Enfance (IHE) in collaboration with the Department of Family Health (DSF), with technical and financial support from UNFPA and AMDD] MdM has thus be able to note in 2012 within a health facility supported in Carrefour, that caused incomplete abortions, accounted for 17% of referrals to hospitals. In Haiti, 11% of girls between 15 and 19 years had at least one child. In health centers supported MdM in rural areas and urban areas, there are regularly unwanted teenage pregnancies... On these same sites, women who adopt a contraceptive method try to remain as unobtrusive as possible, fearing the stigma of their surroundings. MdM states that the prevention of unwanted pregnancies must pass through a greater availability and accessibility of modern contraceptive methods, but also an affirmation of the right of women and girls to decide of having or not having reports and have children or not. These rights were recognized there 20 years by the International Conference on Population and Development (ICPD, 1994) and Médecins du Monde hope that in Haiti as elsewhere, public actions and policies on contraception are based on these rights and dialogue with civil society. Recall that Médecins du Monde has several projects in Haiti since 1989 and today his actions are implemented by teams of MdM Argentina, MdM Belgium, MdM Canada, MdM Spain, MdM France and MdM Switzerland.
