Haiti - Security : Uruguay reaffirms its intention to withdraw its peacekeepers from Haiti

On Friday, the President of Uruguay, José Mujica reaffirmed that after having discussed with Presidents Dilma Rousseff (Brazil) and Nicolas Maduro (Venezuela), he envisaged the withdrawal of Uruguayan soldiers, who are part of the UN Mission for Stabilization in Haiti (MINUSTAH)

"Uruguay will withdraw a part of the forces in the next few days, because of the lack of democratic progress [...] If the Haitian Government does not make any progress toward electoral solutions or does not find a constitutional solution [...] Uruguay will withdraw a part of the forces, which will not be replaced," declared President José Mujica.

"During my meeting with Brazilian President Dilma Rousseff, we agreed we cannot become a 'praetorian guard' (security corps for leaders) due to lack of institutional solutions in Haiti," addind that if "in 10 years we have not resolved these situations. Clearly, we think there has to be another way."

Recall that Brazil and Uruguay represent the largest number of staff in MINUSTAH. Uruguay currently has about 840 and 100 navy stationed in Haiti.

A speech in the conditional, which is more a pressure on the Haitian government to find a solution to the political crisis that has persisted for months in Haiti.
