The first provisional assessment of the passage of the storm Laura is increasing in Haiti, Sunday August 23 the death of 9 people was confirmed (5 in the capital and 4 in the South-East department) and 2 people are missing (the Dr. Jessica Jeanniton, pediatrician at Bernard Mews Hospital and her 10 month old baby).

"I share the sorrow of the families whose loved ones were killed on August 23 during the passage through the country of tropical storm Laura. I urge the population to respect the instructions of the authorities [...]" tweeted President Jovenel Moïse on Sunday.

For his part in a press release, the Prime Minister, Joseph Jouthe also President of the National Committee for Risk and Disaster Management deplores the death of the 10-year-old girl in the locality of Cachiman and the material damage caused by storm Laura, in Anse-à-Pitres, in the South-East. The Head of Government expresses all the solidarity of the Moïse - Jouthe Administration to the family and relatives of the victim as well as to all the other victims of the bad weather facing the whole country.

According to the provisional report dated August 23, from the Office for the Coordination of Humanitarian Affairs (OCHA) in collaboration with humanitarian partners on the ground, initial information shows that the storm has caused flooding in four departments.

Reports indicate that the storm has flooding in 15 communes across the Ouest (Port-au-Prince, Delmas, Carrefour, Pétionville, Cité Soleil, Léogâne, Ganthier, Fonds-Verrettes), Nord-Est (Terrier Rouge), Sud-Est (Jacmel, Cayes-Jacmel, Belle-Anse, Marigot, Anse-à-Pitre), and Centre (Boucan-Carré) departments.

Numerous rivers were flooded across the country.

Preliminary reports of the damage from the storm indicate that numerous houses were flooded, destroyed or damaged and a number of roads were blocked.

The main access road to the town of Les Anglais (South department) was cut off by the flooded river.

Telecommunication services were temporarily interrupted on Sunday morning in the Anse-à-Pitre commune in the Sud-Est department.

In terms of health impact, several hospitals were short-staffed due to the inaccessibility of roads, and the health centre in Anse-à-Pitre was reportedly flooded.

Sunday Departmental Emergency Operation Centers (COUD) and the Departmental Emergency Operation Centers (COUD) across the country were activated. have remained mobilized to help populations in risk areas. The Ministry of Public Works has already decongested the Route de Pèlerin and is active in the communes of Cité-Soleil and Tabarre. Clearing and rehabilitation operations are underway with a view to re-establishing traffic on damaged roads.

The Cayes-Jacmel bridge was submerged by the river as an adjacent bakery caught fire. The departmental road is completely blocked to traffic, impossible to cross.

"Bad weather makes it more difficult to quickly restore the network and electrical circuits. As a result, several areas are at risk of being without electricity for a few days," explains Électricité d'Haiti (EDH).
