Haiti - Environment : Nearly 200,000 items in styrofoam in supermarkets

After the seizures of merchandise in expanded polystyrene [styrofoam) and the closure of several warehouses, at market Solomon, in Grand-rueand to the market Hyppolite, on 8 August, 2013 https://www.haitilibre.com/en/news-9224-haiti-environment-important-seizure-operation-of-polyethylene-and-polystyrene-based-products.html agents of the Ministry of the Environment (MDE) proceeded last week in the seizure of nearly 200,000 items in styrofoam in supermarkets including the Delimart of Delmas, Delmas 2000 and Delimart Tabarre.

Despite the presidential decree banning the importation of these non-biodegradable products, published on 10 July 2013 and entered into force on August 1, 2013, https://www.haitilibre.com/en/news-9138-haiti-environmententry-into-force-of-the-ban-on-polyethylene-and-polystyrene.html companies continue to defy the law by importing clandestinely items in styrofoam in Haiti.

Jean Francois Thomas, Minister of the Environment, noted that the majority of companies have had time to adjust and import biodegradable products, but they still do not respect the law. Stating that he would continue the fight against these products "Zero foam" being the objective. "[...] Now we have to take drastic measures against these people," recalling "[...] We're here to support these entrepreneurs who want to import biodegradable products [...]"

In addition, the Minister Thomas wanted to reassured small merchants, they consider victims of importers, that they will not be affected by these measures.
