Haiti - Politic : Speech to the Nation by President Michel Martelly (excerpts) 01/01/2014 16:59:55 After a Te Deum sung in the Cathedral of Souvenir and the homily of Bishop of Gonaïves, Mgr. Yves-Marie Péan ; after the usual interventions of various personalities, the President of the Republic, Michel Martelly, accompanied by his wife Sophia Martelly and Prime Minister, Laurent Lamothe, in the presence of the Presidents of the two Chambers, members of the Government, local elected, members of the diplomatic corps and former Presidents of Haiti, addressed the nation before a huge crowd in a speech that wanted to be rallying. A speech in which the union and the holding of credible elections in 2014 were omnipresent... Excerpt from the speech of President Martelly : "[...] Our country is very sick, it asked the help of all his children to rebuild [...] on the occasion of 1 January in communion with the spirit of the ancestors, I invite you to gather your forces, to work, so that Haiti become a strong country. This is when we put together than other respects us, others will respect our sisters and brothers who are go for a better life in their country... In 2014 many things await you, we have many things to do together to raise our country, we can not do it in the mess [...] in the spirit of the ancestors, we will be one, to remove the obstacles that prevent us from moving forward on the road of progress and development. In 2014, we will take the road of peace, dialogue, political stability, good elections, democracy, security, the road that will provide employment in the country. A country is like a family, we do not all have the same tastes, but we are all brother and sister. It is in this spirit that I wanted to bring with me today, on the occasion of the celebrations of 210 years of independence of Haiti, all former presidents who live in the country, some were present [Jean-Claude Duvalier and Prosper Avril], others could not be here with us today, but places are there, tthey are waiting for them [...] we want to show that even if we have differences, we can come together to meet our duty when it is in the national interest that is threatened, when it is the interest of the people of Haiti that is threatened. [...] [...] The time is not the same, but the battle is no different [...] as our ancestors did it, today we must fight against the forces that made us retreat. Today these forces are called hunger, unemployment, insecurity, lack of health care and ignorance. Today, all sectors of society must put hand to gather all our strength, to change life in the country, provide work, send children to school, build hospitals, build roads, develop our talents, exploit our wealth, re do our environment, make good elections, develop our agriculture to reach to feed all the country [...] [...] On behalf of this worthy and glorious past, let's develop our capacity to change the lives of our citizens. [...] the struggle to take, if it is not as epic as the one in which was invested our ancestors, is not less mobilizing, I am confident that together we will get to overcome, such as the heroic ages, the obstacles in our way. I sincerely hope that this 210th anniversary brings a new mindset beyond ideologies. We are son of this land and we must think to ensure it a destiny consistent with ideals, which generated our nation-state. This effort is not beyond our capabilities, follow the footsteps of our heroes, we are their worthy successors, and we must always keep in our mind this example of entrepreneurial unit, that they gave us so beautifully. Insofar as we reconnect with the spirit of our ancestors forger of State, where we will find the ways of the union, where we will subscribe to the Republican discipline, we will overcome the underdevelopment, we will walk towards this Haiti of progress and well-being that we call of all our wishes. To structure this republican discipline, which too often has been lacking in our journey as a people, we need men and women animated with a firm sense of duty, determined, determined to serve their country and who are able to transcend their personal interests, of chapel or parties. We need strong, credible and respected institutions designed to regulate the lives of our communities. This is at this price that we can address the political and socio-economic challenges of our time. [...] my brothers and sisters in Haiti and elsewhere, now put our forces together to raise Haiti, take our responsibility to make advance Haiti, whatever the sacrifice it takes. [...] like our ancestors did, walk together to make good elections, to respect the rules and the right of all. I wish every Haitian, regardless of where it is a good Independence Day and a year 2014 crowned with progress, success, successes in peace, health and prosperity [...] [...] Vive our Haiti! Happy New Year to one and all, this January 1, it was a victory, is the victory of the people, Vive Haiti. Thank you" Homily of Bishop of Gonaives, Mgr. Yves-Marie Péan at the Cathedral of Souvenir HL/ HaitiLibre
