Haiti - Cholera : Four departments on Red Alert

For the 25th week (15 to 28 June 2014), a decrease of 74% of cholera cases compared to the same period in 2013 was recorded. Thus, the number of new suspected cases continues to decline around 200 per week. Hospital mortality is at its lowest level since 2010. Nevertheless, the red alert persisted for four weeks in the departments of Centre (Lascahobas), Artibonite (Ennery, Gonaïves and Saint Michel), West (Anse Galet and Cabaret) and North (Plaisance). Northwest (Port-de-Paix) is on orange alert.

Wednesday, in parallel with this situation, was held the second meeting of the High Level Committee on the Elimination of Cholera in Haiti, the Committee established by the Prime Minister and the Secretary General of the United Nations to intensify the implementation of the National Plan for the Elimination of Cholera in Haiti and to facilitate a social and economic accompaniment for communities and those affected by the epidemic. https://www.haitilibre.com/en/news-11249-haiti-health-joint-high-level-committee-for-the-eradication-of-cholera.html

At the meeting, co-chaired by Dr. Florence Duperval Guillaume, Minister of Health, and Sandra Honoré, the Special Representative of the Secretary-General of the United Nations and Head of the UN Mission for Stabilization in Haiti (Minustah) and in the presence of other members of the Committee, including : Marie Carmelle Rose Anne Auguste, Minister Delegate to the Prime Minister, in charge of Human Rights and the Fight Against Extreme Poverty, Pedro Medrano, Senior Coordinator for the cholera response of the UN and representatives of UNICEF, the Government and the United Nations formally approved the launch of a national sanitation campaign.

This is a community initiative to improve the conditions of access to water and sanitation across the country. This campaign will be spread over five years and is expected to hit nearly 40% of the rural population, nearly 3.8 million people. In addition, 600,000 students distributed in 2,500 schools and 500 health centers will also be affected by this campaign.

Sandra Honoré stressed the determination of the United Nations to continue to support the Government of Haiti in its efforts to improve public health and access to drinking water and sanitation. "This new campaign, which is part of the water and sanitation component of the national plan for the elimination of cholera is the best manifestation of this commitment."

The Minister for Human Rights, stressed the need to ensure coherence between the campaign and the actions planned under special Government plans allowing alignment with the priorities of special plans and the plan of fight against extreme poverty.
