Haiti - Social : Stones against the Dove of Peace...
Saturday, at the call of "Miroir" an youth-led organization of Petit-Goâve, several hundred of supporters of local authorities and many young women sympathizers, came from peripheral neighborhoods of the city, marched on the occasion of the World Day of Peace through the streets of Petit-Goâve, so that calm returns to the city that experienced last Thursday, its 10th day of opposition demonstration against the local authority.

Placards and banners in hand, participants sang and were issuing a message of peace and unity in the middle of each crossroads "Petit Goâve demands Peace", "Petit-Goave needs peace", "No to violence", "No to burning tires," "No to discord" some requesting "That the opposition come to sit around the same table with local authorities in order to start the dialogue", "Petit-Goave belongs to everyone and we must live in harmony and peace."

However, upon arrival at the Jubilié Avenue, home of the local opposition, the peaceful protest degenerated after a inhabitants of the area had launched a bottle and stones at the walkers... Peaceful but upset by the attack, the demonstrators "for Peace" fought back by throwing stones in turn... Transforming the march for peace in clashes between opponents and supporters of power, despite the intervention and appeal for calm of Gerson Constant, Coordinator of "Mixed Liberation Front" (opposition).

About 11:00 am sharp tensions still reigned in the neighborhood where gunshots were heard. National Road # 2, for the umpteenth time have been blocked and according to some sources a young boy, who attended the march for peace, was wounded in the arm.

"Never again, the opposition protests will be able to move to the Downtown. Just as they attacked us at Jubilé, we will prevent them to manifest on the Grand'rue," declared government supporters revolted...

Despite this serious incident, the march ended in the public square of Petit Goâve, where Jean Hughes and Pierre Rony, leaders of "Miroir" thanked the participants and reiterated their commitment to work for peace.

Now, Petit Goâve is a highly polarized city where peace and harmony, will take time to come back... until the stones are replaced by an olive branch...
