Haiti - Economy : Import ban on Dominican eggs, more political than sanitary

Michel Chancy, Secretary of State for animal production, confirms the maintains of the ban on importation of poultry products from Dominican Republic, explaining that these products do not meet the requirements of the Haitian sanitary authorities. It seems that the Haiti's sanitary requirements are higher than international standards, since the neighboring Republic exports easily its poultry products in many countries.

At the same time, the Secretary of State ensures that the government wants to facilitate access to credit and supervise technically the companies based in particular in the North East, West and South in egg production, revealing that 4 million eggs are produced each month by a dozen Haitian businesses. Recall that this production represents only 10% of consumption needs in Haiti [nearly 40 million eggs imported each month before the ban].

Michel Chancy, deeply regrets the smuggling of poultry products at the border of the Dominican Republic, at a time when Haiti deploys many efforts in the production of these products. However, the continuation of this ban today no longer causes as much feedback at Dominicans and for good reason, since the ban, the Dominican Republic has opened new markets including Venezuela, to be less dependent on Haiti that before the ban, represented 20% of exports of eggs.

Beyond explanations of the Secretary of State, remember the interest of leaders of major Brazilian groups working in the areas of agribusiness, as evidenced by an agreement signed in the summer of 2013, between "Brasil Food" the argest poultry group in Latin America and "Yunus Social Busines" to revive the poultry sector in Haiti... A project that needs time to materialize... On the other hand, during the last meeting of the binational Joint Commission (CMB), François Guillaume II, the Minister of Haitians Living Abroad, had considered that it would be better for Dominican entrepreneurs to invest in Haiti to produce, rather than exporting their products on the territory of Haiti...

Whatever the political and economic reasons, certainly justified, Haiti must prioritize dialogue and the search of partnership, rather than waving restrictions and risk seeing new obstacles arise on the way to market our products to neighboring market which has just been opened https://www.haitilibre.com/en/news-12357-haiti-economy-beer-prestige-soon-in-the-dr-market.html

While it is true that exports from the Dominican Republic are important and highly unbalanced (1.5 billion against 10 times less for Haiti last year), however, it is necessary to relativize the commercial importance of Haiti, which represents less than 3% of GDP of the neighboring Republic. It is not about to know who has the most to lose, but to find agreements, that will eventually, will be win-win for both economies, as seems to have better understanding the private sector of two country, that politicians.
