Haiti - Diplomacy : Towards a normalization of bilateral relations

Tuesday, to Antigua, Guatemala, on the sidelines during the Summit of Heads of State of the Central American Integration System (SICA), Duly Brutus, the Foreign Minister to meet with his Dominican homology Chancellor Andrés Navarro.

During this meeting, marked by mutual respect, it was extensively discussed of tensions around Dominican diplomatic missions, which prompted the Dominican government to close them temporarily. Navarro stated that the government of President Medina welcomed the steps taken by his counterpart on the security of Dominican diplomatic missions in Haiti.

The two Chancellors discussed various topics related to harmonious relations, that the two countries are willing to continue for their respective populations.

Navarro while reiterating his commitment to deepen an open dialogue frank and respectful between the authorities of both countries, said he believed that this approach "[...] is healthy and ideal for our peoples can achieve development in a climate of peace and harmony."

In addition, the two men agreed for the resumption of the Joint Bilateral Commission, involving the private sectors

Following this meeting, Brutus thanked Navarro for the disposition of the Dominican Government to maintain a harmonious dialogue "like took place this very positive meeting which allowed us to converse amicably on certain contradictions, in addition to taking measures that will bring peace of mind to both peoples."

For its part the Chancellor Navarro said "[...] Brutus, confirmed us that the Government of President Martelly will provide adequate protection to all our diplomatic missions [...] so we hope to conduct their reopening next week."

In this regard, the two Chancellors will meet Friday in Jimani to coordinate the safety device around the Dominican diplomatic endowments in Haiti, meeting to which was invited the head of the UN Stabilization Mission in Haiti (MINUSTAH).

Also in Washington the diplomacy has not remained inactive. The Ambassador of in Haiti Altidor Paul has held a meeting with the Dominican Ambassador José Tomás Pérez, to discuss issues of common interest in the bilateral agenda of their respective countries. More specifically, the two Ambassadors discussed issues related to economic, political, commercial relations. He was discussed of the National Regularization Plan of Foreigners (PNRE) established in the Dominican Republic. The Ambassador Altidor pointed out to his counterpart that the authorities in Port-au-Prince were aware of the importance of Haitian immigrants in the Dominican Republic to obtain the identification documents required by the PNRE and that measures have been adopted to enable the delivery of these documents.

The two diplomats also agreed to work together to strengthen the relations of friendship and cooperation that should prevail between Haiti and the Dominican Republic, as well as to make known that common intention, before the institutions of the Federal Government, of the US Congress, the universities and think tanks in Washington.
