Haiti - Jacmel : The School of Music Dessaix-Baptiste
Three bands, a philharmonic orchestra, a chamber orchestra and two jazz ensemble, piano lessons, violin, viola, cello, clarinet, saxophone, flute, tuba, trumpet, trombone, bassoon, percussion, guitar, bass and music theory, a 300-seat auditorium, 900 students and over 300 musical instruments: in a nutshell the business card of the school of music Dessaix-Baptiste de Jacmel, that Fokal supports since many years.

Music School of Jacmel was founded on March 21, 1998 with the idea of educating young people through arts and culture. The objective of the School of Music Dessaix-Baptiste is to give young Jacmelienne musical training of value for all. Through this training, these young people can become teachers, conductors and composers.

A second objective, more specific, is to provide music education to children severely disadvantaged in the city. Together with a local organization that deals with these children, school music Dessaix Baptist offers some free musical education since September 2003.

Today, 900 students attend the school, supervised by seven professors and twelve instructors. The more advanced students and instructors can assist teachers in dealing with beginners. The training of students also helps the school to save the future expenses that require the salaries paid to teachers from Port-au-Prince. They can also earn their living by offering their services to the orchestras of the city or to other schools in the Republic, for example the music school Sainte-Trinité in Port-au-Prince. The monthly payment is 200 gourds ($5), but many young people are unable to pay regularly.

Dessaix Baptist School frequently organizes concerts and recitals for the public Jacmelienne in its auditorium. The bands also play at funerals or historical events, while an all-female music group plays every year for the national carnival. The band and big band are also involved at least once a year to events outside of Jacmel, in November 2009, the big band played in Port-au-Prince in the festival "Musique en folie".

Nine summer camps have been organized since the opening of school. Summer Camp 2009 has benefited from the services of 14 volunteer teachers from the United States, Canada, China, England, Cuba (with the support of UNESCO) and of course Haiti. In 2010, given the post-earthquake situation, the school has been organizing summer camp but still required to accommodate seven American volunteers so they offer courses during the month of August.

The school always tries to improve the quality of its teaching. Some alumni of the school teachers have become, thanks to invitations, to develop their knowledge and talents in universities and conservatories in the United States and then returned to teach in Jacmel (in the case of the current head conductor and violin teacher). In addition, a student of percussion received a scholarship to continue his studies at the conservatory in Cuba.

After birth and through the efforts and assistance of the Ministry of Tourism, institutions and organizations such as UNESCO and the Foundation Knowledge and Freedom (Fondation Connaissance et liberté FOKAL), the European Union, French Cooperation in Haiti, Embassy of Japan, the child welfare in Canada, the Canada Fund, the Ministry of Culture, the Foundation Barbancourt, the Haitian private sector, the school acquired its own building with two large study rooms including an auditorium with 300 seats and over 300 musical instruments of all kinds.

In the long term, the school Dessaix Baptist plans to expand and open other branches of art such as dance, theater and crafts. For now, the space in which the school is located does not permit this development. Plans have been made to build another more appropriate local, but the funds are to date not yet met to enable this achievement.

October 20, the director of music school and a student of the school will be in Washington DC at the White House where he will receive an award from the first lady of the United States, Michelle Obama's, at the time of the ceremony of handing-over of price of the National American arts and youth.
