Haiti - Social : Strong tension at the Malpasse-Jimani Border

The National Police of Haiti (PNH) formally denies the information released by the Support Group for Returnees and Refugees (GAAR), suggesting that a police officer was injured on Tuesday on the border of Malpasse and transported to a hospital in Fonds-Parisien.

It confirms that a dispute to the Dominican border has occurred between the PNH officer and a Dominican who wanted to extort 2,000 pesos, a Haitian student returning from the Dominican Republic as an entry fee to Haiti.

A Haitian police officer interposed and this caused discontent of the Dominicans, which led to an exchange of stone throwing on both sides of the border. Until the afternoon of Wednesday, the tension was still high. A detachment of the Departmental Unit for Maintaining Order (UDMO) came in reinforcement and stabilized the situation, but the commercial activities has been considerably slower.

Thursday, border market day, the border Jimani/Malpasse was again blocked on the Haitian side, the Haitian-Dominican Transit Union (Syn-Trans-Hai-DO) having decided to launch a strike to demand the return of several trucks belonging to Haitians, blocked at the Dominican side of the border.

Moreover, the Merchants Association of Ouanaminthe (North-East) called on merchants to observe a strike on Friday, August 28, 2015 in solidarity with the Haitian union carriers.
