Haiti - Humanitarian : End of the mission 2015 for the USNS Comfort

On Friday, a ceremony was held at the Admiral Killick naval base of the Haitian Coast Guard located in Bizoton to end officially the humanitarian medical mission to Haiti of the American Hospital ship, the USNS Comfort started on 11 September https://www.haitilibre.com/en/news-15122-haiti-humanitarian-arrival-of-the-us-hospital-ship-usns-comfort.html . The USNS Comfort left the Bay of Port-au-Prince Saturday.

During their stay in Haiti, the crew members of the USNS Comfort ave set up clinics to the Saint Luc's Hospital in Tabarre and the Admiral Killick naval base of Haitian Coast Guard in Bizoton where they could provide free medical and dental care to more than 14,000 Haitians. Patients were also conducted on the ship to undergo surgeries and advanced tests using scanners.

In addition, the crew also conducted engineering works, offered training in preventive medicine and health education at the Hospital of the State University of Haiti (UEH). Specialized technicians in repair of biomedical equipment worked at the General Hospital and Hospital Saint-Luc. Veterinarians have treated animals and helped train the staff of the Ministry of Agriculture.

The Orchestra of the ship gave a concert at the National School of Arts (ENARTS) and conducted music workshops for young people.

The United States thanked the Ministry of Health for hosting this mission and emphasized that this initiative was not only a joint effort of the US and Haitian governments but also of many NGOs and international partners; recalling that the team was composed of military medical staff from several countries and several NGOs volunteers and representatives from American universities.
