Haiti - Epidemic : 500 Haitians intercepted at the Dominican border 29/10/2010 12:59:24
Since the cholera epidemic in Haiti, the number of Haitians seeking to flee Haiti to seek refuge, by all means, in Dominican Republic, has exploded this week.
Within 5 days, more than 500 Haitians have been intercepted by the Special Unit for border protection CESFRONT "These people trying to enter illegally in the Dominican territory, others were hiding in the mountains or in abandoned houses and buildings in Dajabon. The arrested were given to the Department of Immigration in Dajabón for repatriation in Haiti," said a Dominican official.
Since the beginning of the cholera epidemic, the Dominican Republic continues to strengthen its security and border controls. Reinforcements from the Navy and the Dominican Armed Forces have been sent, Military sources have confirmed.
An official Haitian Dominicans asked to show more understanding for his countrymen, adding that there was a lot of misinformation about cholera in the two countries which fueled the fear and tension between the two populations.
