Haiti - Elections : Jude Celestin President ? All methods are good
Opinion polls show the candidate losing. But his partisans cried manipulation. For them the victory of Jude Célestin, is no longer a doubt.
What is not a doubt, it is the unorthodox methods used by the platform INITE to lead the candidate Celestine to victory. A campaign where the dialectic of arms replaced the long speech...
Recall two examples among many : The incident happened in the night of Thursday 11 to Friday, November 12, 2010, around 2:00am, supporters and sympathizers of INITE, the platform of candidate Jude Celestin, sowed terror at the entrance to the city of Jacmel at "portail Léogâne". Yves Rabel, coordinator in the Southeast, for the party "Ansanm nou fò" was manhandled and threatened by a group of heavily armed individuals, led by Senator Joseph Lambert. Some of these individuals are clearly identified as supporters of INITE.
Or the incident of Monday, October 25 around 3pm, at Maissade, Hinche (Central Department) four gunmen in a vehicle identified with INITE party signs, fired gunshots at a vehicle used by Mr. Jean Joseph Leonard, and his entourage, candidate for UCCADDE (Union de Citoyens Haïtiens Démocrates pour le Développement et l'Education) party.
Of course the weapons are only one element used in the INITE campaign, it is also necessary to envisage the handling of the poll and to act on the polling stations. Richard Desir, a representative of the party "Renmen Ayiti", of Presidential candidate, Jean Henry Céant, denounced the relocation of some polling stations usually placed in the downtown of Jacmel, and currently located in the locality of Breman, east of Jacmel. "All of these polling stations will be located at the National School of Breman about 10 meters from the residence of Senator Joseph Lambert, coordinator of the National Platform INITE, where voters will not be safe during the elections day, because of the commando of INITE [under the orders of the Senator Lambert], which has already begun to sow terror in the city".
If this is not enough, INITE does not hesitate to pay people. A video from Aljazeera highlights this practice.
Aljazeera journalist (AJ) :
How much money the camp committee, receives to support Jude Celestin, to go to the rally... ?
The person in charge of the camp (PCC) : Just an example, if he gives us 200,000 gourdes, i can keep 5,000 gourdes and gives people 1,000 gourdes or 500 gourdes. They don't have money (Other candidates), the only person who has money in this country right now is Jude Célestin!
AJ : Why do you think Celestin is a good candidate?
PCC : We don't say he's a good candidate. We have to eat. He's the only who has money right now. We need some money that's why. Not because we love him. Yes, he's given us money already. He will give us some more money.
Some weeks before this interview, similar accusations had been brought against Jude Celestin, who had rejected them (during a interview with the same journalist), saying that "Money can't buy votes here in Haiti. It's about conviction and political ideology".
Just note the use of INITE commandos of supporters in the meetings of others candidates, whose mission is to create disorder and prevent the conduct of these political events, to have a good idea of what Jude Celestin meant by "political ideology" and his personal definition of the word "democracy."
In 7 days our countrymen were called to vote, but can we really say it's free election ? Of a democratic process in such circumstances ? These acts and maneuvers worthy of the crime, will probably multiply by Sunday. Remember that so far no action has been taken against legal persons identified and involved in these facts, [under protectorate of the power in place] and all these people, will continue day and night, to increase their actions of intimidation to convince voters to make the right choice, that to vote for Jude Célestin or to abstain.
