Haiti - Agriculture : Very grim picture of the agricultural sector 11/10/2016 11:16:06
For the Southeast department, 17.325 hectares of farmland have been affected, the most affected crops in areas of Marigot, Marbial, Fonds Jean Noel, Macary are sorghum, figue-banane, etc... Irrigation systems of Charlier and Chanterelles re damaged. The estimated production losses amount to 177,730 metric tons. For the Nippes department, there are 1,500 hectares of plains that were affected. In the zones of Plaisance du Sud, Petite-Rivière des Nippes, Baradere, Grand Boucan, Anse-a-Veau, the most affected crops are Sorghum, Figue-banane, congo peas and fruit (advocates, tree-a-bread, citrus, coconut, etc...) banana production structure is damaged. At the livestock and fisheries the Ministry reported goats losses (70,000 heads), sheep (about 24,000 heads) attle (about 20,000 heads), horses (about 200 heads), poultry. For the South Department, more than fifty perimeters are affected. In the area of Ile-à-Vache, Port-Salut, coteaux, Tiburon, Torbeck, Aquin, Cavaillon,the most affected crops are rice, corn, banana, fruit and forest trees. At the livestock and fisheries, loss of goats, sheep, cattle, etc... loss of fishing equipment (boats, nets...) Rice and corn processing buildings are damaged. The irrigation system of Dory is heavily damage In the department of Grand'Anse, 30,000 hectares of root crops, 8,000 hectares of coffee, 3,000 hectares of beans were affected. In areas of the Les Irois, Abricot, Pestel, Corail, Beaumont, the coffee plantations, fruit trees (tree-a-bread, avocados, citrus...) are the most affected. The Ministry eported the total destruction of fishing equipment (boats, drink, nets...) and the loss of about 150,000 goats, 35,000 sheep, 82,000 pigs. For the West department 11,000 hectares of farmland were affected. In areas of Petit-Goâve, Léogâne, Grand-Goâve, Carrefour, Kenscoff, Arcahaie, Thomazeau/Cornillon, Fonds Verettes, the most affected crops are sorghum, pigeon peas, vegetable crops, coffee, bananas, beans (8,675 seed pots), 200 lbs of cabbage seed, 6,000 lbs of carrot seed, yam. The Ministry reported the loss of fishing gear (boats, nets, and other), of horses, sheep (130), cattle (over 1,000), mullet...) 5,728 goats, pigs (620 to Kenscoff only) equine (257). For the Northwest department, 11,550 hectares of farmland were affected. In Baie de Haine, Môle Saint-Nicolas, the most affected crops are bananas, beans, corn, pigeon peas, cassava, peas strain, unknown peas, peanut, carrot, papaya, fruit trees and forest. The Ministry reported losses of fishing equipment. The estimated production losses amount to 93,200 metric tons. For the department of Artibonite, 470 hectares of farmland have been affected, the most affected crops are bananas, cereals (rice, maize, sorghum), market gardening, legumes (peas strain, beans, pigeon peas...) sugarcane, tubers (cassava, yam...) fruit and forest trees. In areas of Saint-Marc (5th Section, Bocozele). 50 sailboats and boats were damaged. The Ministry report the loss of about 600 head of goats, 180 pigs, 80 cattle, 620 poultry. 10,000 salt ponds flooded in Anse Rouge; irrigation systems damaged in Sarazin, Guilette, Bassin Tortue, Vieux Camp, Colombier, Vieux Cotton, Bois Neuf, Ka-Philippe, Martino (Marmelade), Anse Rouge, Grande Saline, Saint Marc, Terre Neuve, Ennery; 40 km agricultural roads damaged.
