Haiti - Politics : PNH and the Dominican Ministry of Defense discuss border security

On Friday, the National Police of Haiti (PNH) and the Dominican Ministry of Defense initiated a series of meetings in Santo-Domngo on issues related to border security. The meeting was led by Dominican Defense Minister Rubén Darío Paulino Sem, Michel-Ange Gédéon, Head of the Haitian National Police (PNH) and Haitian Ambassador to the Dominican Republic, Pierre-Jean Idalbert.

The delegations discussed organized crime, trafficking of narcotics and goods, vehicle theft and illegal migration.

Michel-Ange Gédéon declared "we hope to strengthen the good relations between our two countries because we know of the great efforts you make to control the border", affirming that on the side of Haiti, with the support of the Minustah and the USA, "efforts are being made to control the flow of undocumented immigrants and to combat terrorism and smuggling".

George Pierre Monchote, Chief of Minustah, also present explained the process of withdrawal of UN troops.

At the end of the meeting Rubén Darío Paulino Sem, concluded "If we work together we can overcome all the challenges that lie ahead and have a secure border for both Nations. Hence the importance of developing and maintaining a permanent exchange with Haiti."

Let's recall that this week the Dominican authorities announced the strengthening of the border following reports of an increase in the flow of Haitians in an irregular migratory situation on the Dominican territory.
