Haiti - Duvalier : "Baby Doc" wants to be cleared of the charges against him
21/01/2011 14:11:30

Haiti - Duvalier :

Mr. Duvalier has left the Karibe Hotel at midday on Thursday to go to a private residence in Montagne Noire. "Mr. Duvalier has no intention of leaving Haiti," said Me Georges, noting that nothing prevented him from leaving the country.

Earlier, Jean Claude Duvalier had informed via Me Reynold Georges, that he would remain in Haiti to defend themselves against charges he is the subject "We want to answer all the requisitions of justice. Because we want to be cleared", his lawyer said.

On the other hand, Me Gervais Charles one of the lawyers of the former dictator, said Thursday during a telephone interview with Radio-Canada, that the charges of crimes against humanity brought against his client were null because "it is a principle that does not exist" in the local law [...] this is not because the person is named Jean-Claude Duvalier, that it is necessary to disrupt the entire Haitian law and introduce principles that do not exist!" launched Me Gervais Charles recalling "We never had action in Haiti for crimes against humanity, and it is a principle of international law which is rather vague", added the lawyer, further emphasizing that during the 25 years of exile of his client "there was never any real complaints" against him.

For its part, the Concertation for Haiti (CPH), a group of Quebec organizations and individual members in solidarity with the Haitian people, denounced the return to Haiti of former Haitian dictator Jean-Claude Duvalier, Sunday, January 16, 2011. Given the lack of separation of powers in Haiti, the lack of security for judges, commissioners and police officers, victims and witnesses, combined with rampant corruption in the entire state apparatus to name only this serious dysfunctions affecting the Haitian judicial system, CPH has requested the establishment of a special court in Haiti for crimes against humanity and violations of human rights committed by Jean-Claude Duvalier.
