Haiti - Duvalier : Extracts from the first television interview of "Baby Doc" 02/02/2011 10:29:12 Former President Jean Claude Duvalier said he had returned to Haiti with a diplomatic passport renewed, but he declined to say when he had obtained and who had issued. He denied being sick to end the rumors and said he was in good health. He acknowledged that he had informed anyone of his return in Haiti but that he assumed that the "French intelligence services" would be aware to his movements. About the $7 million blocked in Switzerland, the former President has indicated "In 25 years [of exile], I've never had a frozen account, either in Switzerland or elsewhere in the world." specifying that the funds in Switzerland does not belong to him "These funds belong to the Foundation Simone Duvalier" adding that "Once these funds will be released, most of them will be used to reconstruct the birthplace to my mother [Leogane]" Questioned about the label of "tyrant" that the world attaches to his name, Duvalier laughed while responding "When they [people] talk to me about tyranny, it makes me laugh and gives me the impression that people suffer of amnesia [...] They have forgotten the circumstances under which I left Haiti. I left voluntarily ... to avoid a major disaster and facilitate a peaceful outcome to the crisis [...] there was no revolution at the time" recalling "I'm the one who initiated the democratic process" asked about how history would remember him, he said "I think it is not important" To a question on his accession to power. Former President Duvalier recognized that "honestly I can not say that I was ready for it" adding that his father had been "an excellent teacher" which had well formed it to become the youngest head of State in the world at 19 years. "It taught me a lot, I learned a lot of him and at his death, he left me with excellent collaborators." Asked if he had met since his return, the Tontons Macoutes he said he was "normal to meet his former supporters." However, to a more specific question, asking how he would describe the role of the Tontons Macoutes during his regime, he refused and asked to switch to the next question. Regarding the charges against him, he refused to go into detail saying that "justice will do what it needs to do [...] so I'll leave this to the justice." Throughout the interview he remained quiet about his political intentions.
