Haiti - FLASH : The Dominican soldiers deploy the great means at the border
Friday, Lieutenant General Rubén D. Paulino Sem, Dominican Minister of Defense ordered the reinforcement of the security measures and border control in the land, sea and air spaces of the Dominican territory, in order to prevent and counter the illegal activities of smuggling and the entry of illegal Haitians.

This measure was announced after receiving the report from representatives of military institutions, state security agencies and the Directorate General of Migration and after a meeting at the Joint Operations Center of the Armed Forces. Minister Paulino Sem instructed members of the armed forces to work towards consolidating the joint operation of forces and unifying criteria on operational, logistical and management procedures.

The troops will be reinforced in the different military endowments and barracks of Cesfront, 3rd, 4th and 5th Brigades as well as in the naval bases located in the North and South regions of the country.

In addition, a strengthening of the Air Force detachments of the Dominican Republic has been established as well as the increase of air patrols by helicopters.

The increase in these control measures has begun since Saturday, December 30 at 8:00 am and the device will be maintained throughout the period recommended by intelligence agencies.

Lieutenant General Rubén D. Paulino Sema specified that apart from the military reinforcements, it was decided the additional integration of tactical vehicles of the army, the navy and the air force for the realization of the patrols on ground and the establishment of preventive maritime patrols along the coast to the south and north of the island. Terrestrial units will have a communication system for the exchange of information in real time.

He also stated that this plan, involves the strengthening and control of the 4 official border posts (Dajabón, Pedernales, Jimaní and Elías Piña), the border communication routes, the international road and more than 85 informal crossing points identified by the military intelligence service adding "[...] new mobile and fixed checkpoints will be put in place to enable the rapid detection of Haitians in an irregular situation in the national territory [...] The objective is to prevent and thwart the attempts of illegal entry of Haitian citizens on the Dominican territory which are multiplying [...]" The Defense Minister urged soldiers in the border area "to exercise caution and transparency while remaining steadfast in the performance of your duty" calling for vigilance, recalling that this holiday season is also conducive to the increase of smuggled products from Haiti.

Recall that in 2017 the Dominican surveillance forces at the border, thwarted, intercepted and turned back in Haiti, more than 60,000 Haitians as they tried to enter the Dominican territory illegally. Note that this average of 5,000 attempts per month, usually doubles during the holiday season and the first month of the year, which explains the new Dominican measures that do not intend to relax their surveillance in front of a new wave of illegal Haitian migrants announced...

Since this summer, 2,000 soldiers in charge of the surveillance of the border between the Dominican Republic and Haiti have been added to the 4,000 already deployed (a little more than 7% of the troops of the Dominican army) July : https://www.haitilibre.com/en/news-21618-haiti-flash-dominican-army-sends-900-more-troops-to-reinforce-border.html October : https://www.haitilibre.com/en/news-22487-haiti-dr-new-military-reinforcement-on-the-dominican-border.html December : https://www.haitilibre.com/en/news-22906-haiti-rd-the-dominican-army-sends-236-soldiers-in-reinforcements-at-the-border.html
