Haiti - Education : The fight for gender equity must begin at school

"Foi et Joie Haïti", a movement of integral popular education and social promotion, advocates for another form of education to deconstruct the perception that the gender of an individual determines his role, his right and his place in society. For the Organization, the struggle for equity must begin at an early age in the classroom.

According to current official figures, Haitian girls are more numerous at the fundamental level (53%) however, their number begins to drop from secondary due to, among other things, the stereotypes of domestic chores which are incumbent on little girls whereas boys are more free to play and study.

"Foi et Joie Haïti" believes that school plays a fundamental role in the reproduction of practices and prejudices attached to it. At the same time, it can be a space for reorienting sexist visions and demonstrating equity between women and men.

In this context, the organization offers since the beginning of 2018 training around sexual education to teachers and parents in the West. The struggle for equity must take into account family-school and school-community relations. This other form of socialization is necessary in the process of deconstruction of sexist stereotypes in both parents, teachers and children, says "Foi et Joie Haïti".
