Haiti - FLASH : Dominicans will further strengthen their border

Since the implementation of the reinforced border security plan at the beginning of March https://www.haitilibre.com/en/news-23724-haiti-flash-dr-new-military-reinforcements-long-range-uavs-and-cameras-on-the-border.html until 10 April, the Dominican army deployed at the border intercepted and returned to Haiti 18,493 Haitians who tried to enter illegally on the Dominican territory and the Specialized Corps of Border Borders (CESFRONT) 4,912 additional Haitians for a total 23,405 of our compatriots fleeing Haiti in search of a better life, in nearly a month and a half. Note that these figures only concern interceptions at the Dominican border and do not take into account Haitians deported to Haiti during this same period following frequent migratory controls throughout the Dominican territory.

Moreover, the units involved in the fight against smuggling at the border indicated that during this same period, they seized from Haiti: 31,870 cartons of cigarettes, 21,500 kg of garlic, 397 kg of marijuana, 7,400 packets of soups, 64 gallons of clairin, 1,992 bottles of whiskey, among other things.

For his part, Ángel Estévez, the Minister of Agriculture, said that a lot of contraband garlic is entering the border https://www.icihaiti.com/en/news-23600-icihaiti-dr-discovery-of-25-tons-of-smuggled-garlic-from-haiti.html , because it's very profitable for smugglers, a situation that affects trade and producers in the Dominican Republic https://www.icihaiti.com/en/news-23721-icihaiti-rd-partial-assessment-of-the-fight-against-haitian-smuggling.html

The Dominican Defense Minister Rubén Diario Paulino Sem declared "that border surveillance will be further strengthened", pointing out that there are still weaknesses in the monitoring system, stating "Local authorities have told us where we need to improve border security. "

In the meantime, the Attorney General of the Republic welcomed the early results of the Border Security Plan and stressed the importance of working jointly with other authorities, stressing that by unifying efforts, resources and capacities the results "will be even more effective in the fight against illegal activities."
