Haiti - FLASH : Fuel prices rise, Government plays on words

After intervening on May 16 to explain the increase by the end of June, of prices of petroleum products on the national market https://www.haitilibre.com/en/news-24395-haiti-economy-rising-fuel-prices-minister-delva-prepares-spirits.html announced by Jude Alix Patrick Salomon, the Minister of the Economy https://www.haitilibre.com/en/news-24319-haiti-economy-announcement-of-unpopular-measures-in-the-coming-days.html , Minister of Communication Joseph Guyler C. Delva spoke again Monday at a press conference on this potentially "explosive" issue.

Delva pointed out that Haiti has never applied the normal price of fuel at the pump, because of the subsidy granted by the state. He recalled that the prices of petroleum products did not depend on the State, but on its evolution on the international market affirming "It will not be an increase, but a price adjustment" of petroleum products on the national market" a nuance that will make more than one smile, especially as this or these "adjustments" will not be without consequences on the prices of transport and essential goods, which will not smile person.

Minister Delva recalled "The state must levy taxes in all economic spheres in order to increase the tax base to be able to strengthen social programs for the most vulnerable and invest in infrastructure works" all reassuringly explaining the Administration's efforts to set up more than 700 community restaurants across the country https://www.haitilibre.com/en/news-24325-haiti-social-more-than-600-community-restaurants-soon-again-in-operation.html https://www.haitilibre.com/en/news-24410-haiti-social-provision-and-reopening-of-100-community-restaurants-in-the-west.html to meet the needs of the most vulnerable people

In anticipation of public reactions, Delva urges all citizens to remain calm and avoid any attempt of social unrest and acts of vandalism, warning that police and judicial authorities will take all measures to neutralize all troublemakers.

While arguing in favor of fiscal responsibility, Minister Delva reaffirmed the Government's determination "to foster a stable, investment-friendly climate, which will facilitate job creation and the growth of the national economy with a view to establish sovereign governance..."
